Magic the Gathering The Hobbit Set Releases

Wizards of the Coast returns players of Magic the Gathering to the lands of Middle Earth. This time in the time frame of the Hobbit. So for all of those Lord of the Rings fans out there rejoice! Magic the Gathering The Hobbit releases August 14th 2026.

The Set has already released on the digital Magic Arena on August 11th 2026. The pre release for the set was over the course of the week starting August 7th to August 13th.

But now it’s time for the main event. The Hobbit set is releasing in several different options to purchase from Wizards of the Coast.

The main set of Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit includes 60 common, 55 uncommon, 53 rare, and 15 mythic rare cards. There are also 5 common dual lands and 5 default frame basic lands.

• Collector Booster Set which is currently going for close to $800 at the time of writing this article it contains 12 boosters and a box topper, all cards are foil in this set.

• Draft Booster Box - comes with 12 booster packs and 1 collector booster pack and 90 non foil basic lands

• Booster Box - contains 30 booster packs and a box topper card

• Bundle box - traditionally the fat pack, this comes with 9 booster packs.

• Gift Box - 9 booster packs and 1 collector booster pack

• Scene Boxes - there are 2 different scene boxes

  • 3 Boosters Packs

  • 6 Traditional foil borderless scene cards

  • 6 Art cards

  • 1 Display easel

• Pre Release Box - This contains 6 booster packs, a deck box, and a spin down die

Like how the Magic the Gathering Lord of the Rings set contained the One Ring, The Hobbit has the golden Smaug the Magnificent card. This special designed card is a 2U 2R Legendary Creature - Dragon from the Hobbit books.

According to Wizards of the Coast there are only 500 gold Smaug cards printed for this set and can only be pulled from Collector booster packs.

There are other style cards released in this set as well such as the classic art cards, cards that are written only in dwarfish language, Dragon border cards, and book cover cards.

In addition to this, the full scene boxes each contain a set of 9 cards that when pieced together display a full scene of a scene from the book the Hobbit like the meal at Bags End, or the encounter with Bilbo and Smaug.

I am a sucker for cool lands, and the lands in this set are season changing lands. For instance the plains are an image of a hobbit hole door over the course of the seasons like Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.

I obviously have a soft spot in my heart for Middle Earth and anything Tolkien related so to see Magic the Gathering come back to Middle Earth with the Hobbit is cool.
