Talisman 5th Edition Buying Guide

Talisman 5th Edition Buying Guide

Talisman has entered it’s 5th edition after being picked up my Avalon Hills in 2024. This replaces the 4th Edition game that was traded around between Games Workshop, Fantasy Flight Games and Pegasus Spiel.

I have the entire collection of 4th Edition, and many other Talisman fanatics do as well, so what is the difference between 4th Edition and 5th Edition?

The first notable difference is the Art, the colors are more vibrant from the character cards to the board itself. The Core game also comes with a different mix of base characters to choose from for playing the game. Those that are used to the 4th Edition will find that there are not super substantial changes to the game, but more of a refresh to the game.

Talisman 5th Edition are not compatible with 4th Edition base or expansions. this is due to the cards being different sizes for the decks as well as some rule mechanics changes. The good news is, that the game is relatively affordable to pick up, in stock, and actively receiving new expansions from Avalon Hills.

Talisman 5th Edition the Base Game

Talisman 5th Edition plays relatively similar to that of 4th Edition with some quality of life improvements and several game mechanic changes. The game does feel to be more streamlined but still just as easy to play and learn.

For those who do not know, Talisman is a game of powering up your character and attempting to be the first to the center of the board to take the Crown of command and control the world. Along the way characters can fight each other, encounter monsters, and complete small quests to get the resources they need to make their way to the center of the board and win. Be careful though cause danger lurks everywhere and you could just get turned into a toad.

The base game at the time of writing this article is going for $31. You can pick up the base game here. To see what you are getting in the game take a look at what is offered below:

The base game for Talisman 5th Edition comes with 12 playable characters out of the box that are unpainted. 100 Adventure cards to use during the game, along with other cards and pieces that are used through the game by the player such as weapons, spells, alignment cards. Of course the game also comes with the famous cones that depict the total power level of your character and plastic coins to keep track of your players wealth to buy things during the course of the game.

Talisman 5th Edition Expansions

There are several expansions to the Talisman 5th Edition version of the game. As the games release is still young, there are more expansions on the way to fill out the board just as was done in previous editions to the game.

Talisman Alliances Fate Beckons Expansion

The first expansion released for Talisman 5th Edition was the Talisman Alliances Fate Beckons Expansion. This expansion acts quite differently mechanic wise to 4th Edition releases in that there is sealed content that is not viewable until working through a session of the game.

Alliances Fate Beckons allows players to work together and share resources which is counter to the normal version of the game to achieve a common end game goal.

The expansion is meant to be played by completing each of the trials. Similar to games like Gloomhaven. Objectives and trials need to be completed before unlocking characters for the first time that come with the expansion.

This was never done in Talisman 4th Edition and is a really cool way to give the game a sense of progression and a campaign like setting that has not been done before. With this expansion players will be going through 5 total trials and unlocking new characters as they progress with the matching boxes for the corresponding trials. Of course if that does not suit you, you can always just open the character boxes and use them for your main game as well.

This set is available on Amazon here. If we take into terms how 4th Edition was released, this would be considered a small expansion and is a pretty neat and affordable pickup to change the way the game is played and get new characters.

Talisman Nemesis Call of the Hunt Expansion

The second expansion released is the Talisman Nemesis Call of the Hunt Expansion. This expansion in particular comes with a new center board tile that lays over the base game’s center board.

This expansion allows 1 player in the game to be the bad guy while the rest of the players for the session are up against that one player.

Done in a different way from the Alliances expansion, this set has 3 Trials that come in the box. Also like in the previous expansion, there are new playable characters that are unlocked as well as some additional large miniatures to paint up and use in your game.

The center of the board gets an alternate version that sits atop the base game board. This is a two sided center piece that has different options to play or are used for the trials during the game. Think of this as the first board expansion to the base game even though it’s not a corner piece to the board. It harkens back to the dragon expansion from Talisman 4th Edition.

It’s also noted that this expansion plays much sorter than the base game estimated at around an hour, so if you need a shorter game, this expansion is a perfect fit.

You can buy this expansion on Amazon here.

Talisman Sagas Crown of Blood

Talisman Crown of Blood Expansion

Soon to be released Talisman Saga Crown of Blood is the next slated expansion to the 5th Edition Talisman base game. This takes on the horror aspect of the game similar to 4th Edition Blood Moon and Reaper expansion.

What will be in this expansion?

  • 3 Character cards

  • 1 Dracula reference card

  • 30 Spell and Adventure cards

  • 1 Dracula's Castle board overlay

  • 4 highly detailed miniatures (Investigator Mina Harker, Professor Van Helsing, Count Dracula -- and 1 alternate antagonist, the Fanged Toad)

  • Rule book

The expansion also allows for ongoing game mechanic changing event cards as seen in thins such as blood moon with day and night cycles.

Once this expansion becomes available check back here to get your own copy of the expansion and expand your 5th Edition version of the game. The tentative release date for this expansion is June 15th 2026.
