Captain America The First Avenger Review

Captain America The First Avenger

Though it’s not the first movie released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America the First Avenger struggles to get me interested in the hero and the man behind him. Here is our review on Captain America the First Avenger and why I feel it fails to deliver.

The Setting

The movie takes place back in 1942. A mysterious powerful cube has been acquired by Hydra and they plan to harness it’s abilities to produce weapons and take over the world. to counteract this, a newly formed service called S.H.E.I.L.D which stands for “Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division” They along with the newly created Captain America work together to take down Hydra.

The Characters

Steve Rogers who is played by Chris Evan’s is Captain America. Through the course of the movie we see how Steve starts out as a weak scrawny man who has the moral compass to catch the eye of a scientist who needs a new test candidate for the super soldier program.

There are characters that stand out much more to me in this movie thought like Agent Carter. Her character takes pity on Steve and saw him before and after his transformation.

It was also good to see the character that plays Howard Stark. Using his character in this movie both grounded the movie into the cinematic universe but also created a pretty interesting wealthy man that explains some more of the wealth and smarts that Tony Stark inherits later on.

Bucky Barns to me is a severe let down of a character in this movie. I understand that his character gets much more fleshed out that that there is only so much time to go over other characters in the movie that need the attention. But if there was any plan to use him in the future, it would have been since to give this character a little more screen time.

Captain America’s Major Issues

Captain America, the First Avenger has an image issue. The hero in his pajama’s like costume makes it very hard to get over his look. Regardless of it fitting the times, later movies try to get around this by toning the color of his outfit down some. But it’s incredibly distracting and hard to get behind in this film.

Hydra and the battles with them through the course of this movie are also corny and generic. Comparing to later entries in the series, it’s surprising how much better and more interesting they are in comparison to this one.

Captain America’s Strengths

There are some notable takeaways from this movie however. I did really enjoy the propaganda that were in this movie. It was cool to see that they used him more as an American image over and actual solider.

I also did really enjoy the side characters that back up Captain America, I wish that there was another movie that they could have played a part in.

Captain America is a Skippable Movie

But unfortunately, that is about it. Everything else in this movie drags it down for me. There is also not really much that this movie has to offer and I consider it an easy movie to skip if looking to shrink the watching experience of the entire MCU. Captain America simply put does better in movies where he is not the only star.

That being said, if you still are wanting to watch this movie, it can be watched with a Disney Plus Subscription, or you can purchase the movie here.
