Nemesis Games kicks off after the events of Cibola Burn with the crew of the Rocinante at Tyco Station. Jim Holden, Alex Kamal, Amos Burton, and Naomi.
The crew splits up the party during the events of this book with Amos heading back to Earth checking on a friend that passed away to make sure that there was no foul play. During this time on Earth however things take a deadly turn leading Amos and another past character to join together to attempt to survive the events that transpire.
Holden stays on Tyco Station and spends a good amount of time in the book missing his crew members. The events of the past books in the series have drawn him close to his crew members of the Rocinante. He does work on investigating ships that are going missing through the ring gates during this time.
Alex Kamal goes back home to Mars to visit his ex wife to attempt to make amends. He ends up running into Bobbie Draper and they uncover a mystery on Mars.
Naomi Nagata heads to Ceres Station and finds out that her son Philip is in trouble. Little does she know that Philip is mixed up with her ex lover and father to her son Marco Enaros. This is the OPA free militia. They are threatening Mars and the UN to seek control over the ring gates and center point station so as to give all the Belters their fair stake to the solar system and now the universe.
What made this book so enjoyable is that there was no sense of padding in the story. The reader gets to follow all the characters that we have come attached to through the course of the Expanse with no point of view characters outside of the crew of the Rocinante.
I personally enjoyed Amos and Holden’s characters the most in this book. They are dealing with pretty massive events over the course of the book that I frankly did not expect the authors to go to. Because of this the looming threats in this book feel drastically larger and more politically charged than in the first 3 books. I single those out as Cibola burn did have a good amount of military politics involved with it.
This brings up how there is a split in the OPA of what the belters feel is right for their place in the solar system that has been exasperated with the ongoing wealth that is coming to and from the ring gate network.
Because of the ring network and how it has changed so much, not just the OPA is affected. Mars and their terraforming goals are perceived as a useless endeavor now that more earth like planets are available with the ring gate system.
Conclusion
The Expanse Nemesis Games is one of my favorite books in the series if not my favorite book in the series. For anyone that has gotten this far in the series, it connects you to the crew of the rocinante so well. It also happens to be the middle book to the entire series as well as the major plot of the second arc of the Expanse. Having read the whole series at this point, looking back at them, this book really set in stone why I love the expanse and got me excited for what was to come next.
