Westworld Season 3 Episode 3 Review

Westworld Season 3 episode 2 returns to following Caleb and Dolores. We also get to see the host version of Charlotte as she takes on the responsibilities of running Delos.

Charlotte is having an identity crisis. She says that “it’s like she's inside me and trying to cut me out.” This reminds me of the actions that Delos himself was taking in the second season knowing that he was a host while trying to transition to immortality as a host. He went crazy and cut his face up similar to how Charlotte is cutting herself up. Perhaps the Host Charlotte is actually Charlotte herself that cannot handle the fact that she is not herself.

We find out that Serac has been buying up shares to the Delos company and no one really knows who he is. This puts pressure on Charlotte on the job as she has to instruct the company to find the mole that Serac has in Delos itself.

Towards the end of the episode we learn that Charlotte was the mole herself. She was trying to smuggle out the host minds from the park. It will be interesting to see if she attempts to maintain the double agent status and go against Dolores or if she will report what she knows to her.

The other half of the episode centered around Caleb and his run in with Dolores. The episode begins where the first episode left off. Dolores is bleeding out in Caleb’s arms. A ambulance arrives and starts to take her to the hospital and Caleb goes with. The paramedics don’t know what to do because she doesn’t have symptoms of her injury like a normal human.

Some bought police offices pull over the ambulance and Caleb protects Dolores and together they kill both of the hired hands that were going to take them away. After all of this help, Dolores leaves Caleb saying that it’s best that he not know who she is.

Later in the episode though, Dolores has a change of heart and decides that she should recruit Caleb. She finds him, and explains to him how Incite has all the information about his life even to the most personal detail. The details go as far as to predict how Caleb will die and where as well as not allow him to get anything beyond physical labor jobs.

So it looks like Caleb still now really knowing who Dolores actually is, has signed on to help bring down Incites system and expose humanity for what actually is.

The show does appear to be going in a much more linear direction. There does not seem to be the same level of mystery in this season that the past two were able to have. Hopefully this is something that changes as the season progresses. The episode felt more to me like a between episode that ties two more compelling episodes together so I will be good to see what comes from all this now that the characters stories are all lined up.

The next episode will be going over William, so it will be exciting to see where the producers of the show will be taking his character. Especially at the end of season 2 when it was heavily implied that he is a host as well in a dilapidated forge area in the Westworld park.
