Captain Marvel Review

Take the fun environment of the 90’s aesthetic which is becoming increasingly popular with time and mix it with some over the top action that become expected with Marvel movie and you get Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel is the second movie in the Marvel cinematic universe timeline at the time of writing this article and has had the benefit of all the movies that have come before it.
But even after all that is said, the movie faced some criticism so we aim to answer the question. “Should you watch Captain Marvel?”
Where to Watch Captain Marvel
Currently, Captain Marvel is available for streaming on Disney+ but can be rented or purchased from your other digital and brick and mortar retailers.
One neat thing about watching it with Disney+ however is that it comes with most of the other movies in the franchise as well including some of the new series like WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The Story
Captain Marvel like many Marvel movies does not have the strongest unique storylines and plot developments to it. That being said, the traditional Marvel formula here is a little bit tweaked to create mystery for the end of the movie.
The story takes place years after the events of the first movie in the timeline, Captain America: the First Avenger.
Captain Marvel is the second movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.
Carol Danverse (Bree Larson) or in the first act Ver, is a part of an interstellar police force lead by Yon-Rogg (Jude Law). Throughout the first act of the film, they are tasked with hunting down a species of alien called Krulls.
Through the movie Captain Marvel makes many discoveries that uncovers her own mysterious past as well as opens her eyes to what is really going on around her.
She is aided through the movie as well by a younger Nick Fury who appears to just getting wind of the expanding scope and threats that the world may face.
At the end of the day. I think that the story that Captain Marvel has does not get enough credit. The story can be a bit confusing at times, but does all still make sense in that Marvel kind of why. These movies are not designed for super in depth thinking for complex storylines and those looking for those would be hard pressed to so much other Marvel movies delivering substantially more that what is already in Captain Marvel.
The Characters in Captain Marvel
For the most part, the characters in Captain Marvel came down to just a couple for me that stood out. Vers and Nick Fury make a good duo in the film. I enjoy the amount of action that the two get into together during this movie. The jokes play off each other well.
Ver’s later when she meets her past life’s friend from the Air Force Maria Rambeau. the characters work together as the movie progresses as Ver’s regains the memory of her past self Carol.
Yon-Rogg is a pretty bland unlikeable character in this film. I had high hopes when I first saw that Jude Law was entering the fray of Marvel movies. Unfortunately, his character just really does not have a whole lot of interesting aspects.
An unexpected surprise in this film though was Ronan. This is the same villain first seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy and was pretty fun to see in this film and be a big threat as well.
Is Captain Marvel Worth Watching?
There is a lot of complaints on this movie that I find a little overblown in relation to the politics and that really did not come up at all after the watching of Captain Marvel. If fact, I felt that this movie was still an enjoyable time to watch.
I would recommend that people skip the criticisms for this movie and try and come up with your own after having watched it. What I found that despite what I heard about this film, it was still a good time.
There is some genuine humor in this movie that I really enjoyed. Some of the stuff that stood out to me was the cat that is not actually a cat and Nick Fury. This continues through the film and has a pretty funny payoff.
So if you are wondering can Captain Marvel can be skipped? Or should be skipped I would say that it’s not integral to the storyline if it’s left out, but it does explain how a few things end up where they are and how they got there. These things will not make or break later films in the storyline.
If you are pressed for time to get through the movie, it can be skipped. But at the same time, I would still recommend watching this movie. Captain Marvel is not a stand out film in the grand scope of the movie franchise, but it’s still a high quality Marvel adventure.
