Icewind Dale Rime of the Frostmaiden was leaked as the next Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition book. During the Dragon Live 2020, we finally got some news as to what this new book will all include. Let’s dive into what this icy adventure will contain!

The leak stemmed from a video that was posted on the D&D beyond channel in which was later quickly removed but not before several people were able to get their hands on some screen shots of the book.

This coincides really well with the soon to be released video game for Dungeons & Dragons “Dark Alliance”. This video game appears to be set in a snowy region of the Forgotten Realms.

So with the tundra theme that appears to be circulating this seems to add fuel to the fire, or ice to the glaciers if you will.

So what do we know about Icewind Dale?

Icewind Dale is in the northwest corner of the Sword Coast right by the Sea of Moving Ice and the Spine of the World. The area has been explored in based items from dungeons & Dragons history such as the game released in the early 2000’s called Icewind Dale developed by Black Isle Studios.

There have also been several novels released that feature this area over the years.

This location is a cold Tundra like climate with nomadic barbarians and fishing towns.

One location that will most likely play some sort of role in this book is Bryn Shander which is the largest town in the area of Icewind Dale.

Now that D&D live has rolled around we get a good look at what the new book will be offering. The story will be survival horror based in the icy tundra.

There are secrets hidden in the tundra that are worth great reward while a growing threat gets closer to the player group as they try and survive in the unforgiving terrain.

There will be more new monsters in this book than in any other adventure module released to date. This will be themed around tundra based monsters and some story based monsters. They also take a new take on monsters that exist in the dungeon master guide with an icy twist!

The illustrations that are described in this book are dark. When I look at the specific images that were shown in the video, I get the feeling of Game of Thrones north of the wall mystery. Chris Perkins also said that some of the art inspired elements to the story that this book will be trying to tell.

There are some new magic items and a handful of new spells. Some of the magic items are described as terrible and powerful.

There will be a couple large dungeon like locations that will be coming with this book that are described as “not like normal dungeon locations” - Chris Perkins

The adventure level of the book is designed for levels 1-12. It will have some more interesting and dramatic conclusions that stand out from other campaign books released so far.

If you are wanting to find out more about the this region in the Forgotten Realms, I highly recommend you watch the lore video created by Hollow Tale. His content is fantastic and if throw some likes and subscriptions his way if you can!
